HB236: Removing Obscene Material from Our School Libraries

Last updated on January 29, 2025

Impact on Libraries

This bill does not directly affect public librarians, but it does remove an exemption for K-12 school librarians that would allow them to be prosecuted for a crime if they are found guilty of providing “obscene and other sexual materials and performances”.
There is no definition for “other sexual materials and performances”, which is an overreach; the current version would mean that a librarian could be charged for public indecency for providing materials on puberty.
